About the Artist
Horseshoe artist Patrick O'Connor is new in 2016. He came in late last year. His horseshoe art is pretty amazing. It's funny. It's funky. It's useful. Anybody dealing with horses just loves it. These are all used horseshoes, so they have history and authenticity to them. They need to be cleaned up and scrubbed up extensively to make what you see here.
I grew up in Maine. I grew up in Posey Lake. I left Maine for 15 years and came back after living all over the world. There's nothing like home.
At this time of my life, I live off the grid. That means no neighbors. It's wonderful. I'd like to be able to do it the rest of my life. I know I won't be able to do it when I get older, I won't be able to pull it off. But for now, I'm having the time of my life living off the grid. I have a cell phone and an antenna booster on my roof. I have two generators and rarely use them unless I'm making my horseshoe art.
My wife has a lot of good ideas for me, and I have ideas that come from 20+ years. When I lived out west I started doing this. One of my favorites was that I made a bull rider that was all made out of horseshoes and nuts and bolts. I gave the first one I ever made to my father for Christmas.
What's the Rest of the Story?
For most of my life I've looked at moose through my window. I've had them on my front step. That's just where I live, that's where they are. They walk through the yard. When I let my dogs out, they'll chase them away.
I opened up the front door once and saw a moose five feet away. It doesn't surprise me anymore, because of where I live, this hometown that I live in. I remember as a child...
