About the Artist
I've known Joe for a long time and never realized he was an artist, until one day he brought some of his work in! Our webmaster, Johnny Monsarrat, bought a night landscape painting with a full moon, and discovered when he hung it and turned out the lights that it was painted with glow-in-the-dark paint! The moon from the painting shone inside his house.
The first time I came up was on vacation in the mid-80s. My wife came up here when she was small.
It is just beautiful. So we moved up in 1987. Having been brought up in the city, I was always kind of a country boy at heart. I felt like this was home when I came up here. It's just a beautiful place to be, and there's so much to see and do. It becomes part of you.
Growing up and working in New York and Manhattan for years, it's hustle and bustle. It's very quick moving. There's no time to smell the roses. You're working and trying to make a living and bring up kids. Upstate New York was two hours out of Manhattan, so I had to travel down to Manhattan every day, and it takes all your time to enjoy life. So once you move up here, you take a deep breath and think, ah this is better. Big difference. Big big difference. The quality of life is what it is. There's a better quality of life for your family.
I've always felt an artistic passion in me for years and years. I never got to painting until a few years back, and I just look around me. I especially like the lake and the mountains, shorefronts mostly. I have several paintings in the shop of lake views, mountains, and birch trees. I have two paintings in there that are abstract, birch paintings.
I just look around me and whatever I feel comes up, I just try to go with it and see where it takes me.
What's the Rest of the Story?
Once a "drunk moose" plopped right onto the hood of my car. And I wasn't even moving!
