Painted Gourds, Gourd Jewelry
About the Artist
Eleanor works with gourds and has been featured in “The Gourd Magazine” and “Paint the Town”, an online painting community. My favorite are the chicken gourds! Those are new this year.
What is a gourd? Squash, pumpkins, watermelons, and more are given that name. For these works for art, Eleanor grows her own small gourds, and the large ones, which require a longer growing season than we have in Maine, she buys from out West and paints them in Sanford, Maine. Of course to a Mainer, "Out West" means anything west of New Hampshire.
I was born and raised here in Maine. I've lived in York for my whole life, 64 years. My husband Darrell and I have been married for 43 years. We have two sons, a daughter and three grandchildren.
While raising my children, I began participating in local craft fairs.
I used to teach painting and then somehow I got a hold of a gourd. I started painting on gourds, and then from there I went to burning on gourds. Now I'd rather work on a gourd than anything else.
You can want to do something with a gourd, but if it's got something in mind of its own, you just go along with it. And the outcomes are surprising. That's happened to me a few times. I can't say enough about gourds. I really do love them.
I've tried raising them, I had my friend help me, and we planted one gourd seed in a compost heap, and we got over 100 plants off that one gourd. The stem on it was over an inch thick, so that was amazing. They were very thin gourds, so I only use them for jewelry. In Maine, the growing season isn't as long as out west where you can get thick gourds.
What's the Rest of the Story?
Once we were riding our ATVs up in Greenville, and we happened to go around a corner of one of the back roads, and a bear came out!
