Shirley Mills, Maine
About the Artist
Charlie and Debi Baker are from Shirley Maine. They have a sugar bush with a sugar house, so they do their own maple syruping. If you open a jar of their maple sugar coated peanuts, you might as well just figure it's gone, because you're not going to be able to stop eating them. See our other edibles at Gallery on the Lake, too. We have "great taste"!
I'm 77 years old and have lived in the beautiful State of Maine all my life. I have traveled throughout 25 of our beautified states and also Canada, but I love Maine the best.
We are a small Maine Maple Syrup Producer of syrup and maple sugar coated peanuts, located on the east branch of the Piscataquis River in Shirley, Maine. One of us (Charlie) has been tapping (900+) trees on his family's homestead property for 20 plus years.
We are located 1,000 to 1,300 feet in elevation so our Maple Syrup Season starts later than the southern parts of the state. Currently we have syrup in a variety of sizes and maple sugar coated peanuts available at Gallery on the Lake. Our syrup has earned awards in the last four seasons for best taste. Maple Syrup Season is usually the 3rd week of March to the 3rd week of April.
What's the Rest of the Story?
One time while biking into my camp after work and after dark on my motorcycle, I saw something dark running on the side of the road.
The road was a narrow gravel road with lots of alder bushes growing along the edges of the road forming a tunnel. When I saw the dark animal, I switched my lights onto high beam. But it was so bright that for a few seconds I couldn't see properly.
Then I saw the hind leg of a large moose hit the front fender of the bike. I had come up right behind him!
